Singapore Travel Guide: Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay & More

Singapore felt like stepping into the future. In just two whirlwind days, we watched the skyline glow from the world famous Marina Bay Sands infinity pool, wandered through misty cloud forests filled with dinosaurs, explored Crazy Rich Asians filming locations, sampled hawker food, and watched Supertrees come alive beneath the city lights. Every corner seemed to reveal another iconic view, hidden garden, or unforgettable experience. While our schedule was packed and our legs definitely felt the effects of Singapore’s heat and humidity, the city left us wanting more. This guide combines our actual itinerary, favorite experiences, practical tips, and honest feedback to help you experience the very best of Singapore while avoiding the mistakes we made along the way.

🗓️ Itinerary

This itinerary is based on our April 4–6 visit to Singapore at the beginning of our Asia 2026 trip. With only two full days, our schedule was intentionally packed and covered many of the city’s highlights, including Marina Bay Sands (MBS), Gardens by the Bay, several Crazy Rich Asians filming locations, Chinatown, Kampong Glam, and Little India. While we were able to hit most stops, with jet lag, Singapore’s heat, and the amount of walking, it was very exhausting. If we were planning the trip again, we would add at least 1–2 more days to slow the pace, give our legs a break, and spend time exploring Sentosa Island, which we unfortunately had to skip this trip.

💡 Singapore Tips

🏨 Arrival + Marina Bay Sands (MBS) Tips

  • 🏨 Crowne Plaza arrival win: The hotel is directly connected to the Changi Airport, which makes it incredibly convenient after a long flight.
  • 🌿 Jewel strategy: Focus on the Rain Vortex and Forest Valley only your first night instead of trying to do all of Jewel. The Rain Vortex operates 10 AM – 10 PM so plan accordingly.
  • 🏊 MBS pre-check: Drop bags and pre-check in early since this can unlock pool access and sometimes an early room.
  • 🛍️ Shoppes: Most stores and the Rain Oculus do not get going until 10 AM, so going too early is not worth it.

🌺 Gardens by the Bay + Light Show Tips

  • 🌫️ Cloud Forest first: Head here right at opening to beat crowds.
  • 🌉 MBS to Gardens route: The overpass walk is scenic, but the underground route is easier & cooler if you want at fast, AC option.
  • 🌳 Supertree Observatory: Go all the way to the top platform since the signage is easy to miss and the best views are up there.
  • Light Show order: Spectra first, then Garden Rhapsody, is the smoothest flow for the evening with less backtracking.
  • 🚕 Grab + Gardens: Pickup points can be confusing and after the light shows waits get long, so confirm your location in the app and be prepared to wait.

🗺️ Culture Route & Walking Tips

  • 🗺️ Neighborhood flow: Bugis, Kampong Glam, and Little India sequence well in one stretch and make for an easy culture-focused afternoon.
  • ⚠️ Little India note: This was the weakest stop for us, so it’s worth keeping flexible if you prefer Singapore’s more polished neighborhoods.
  • 🏮 Chinatown: Check your route on Google Maps before heading out so you do not end up wandering down odd back alleys.
  • 🚧 Merlion to Helix Bridge: This stretch had a lot of construction and was not especially scenic, so catch a Grab if you want to shorten your walk and eliminate this route.
  • 🔥 Heat reality: Singapore is hotter and more draining than it looks on paper, so leave buffer time between neighborhoods and major sights to cool off, recharge, and escape the midday heat.

🎬 Crazy Rich Asians Tips

  • 🎬 Film Location Strategy: Most filming locations are clustered around Marina Bay, the Civic District, and Chinatown. Use Grab strategically because Singapore’s heat is relentless and we still logged over 22,000 steps exploring filming locations.
  • 🦪 Humpback Restaurant: Request the outdoor patio table from Rachel and Peik Lin’s lunch scene. The staff fully embraced the movie connection and made this one of our favorite Crazy Rich Asians experiences.
  • 💍 Esplanade Park: Don’t just walk through. Seek out the stepped seating area from Nick’s proposal scene and compare the skyline, bridge, and Fullerton Hotel backdrop to the movie.
  • 🌳 Supertree Grove: Visit after dark for the closest match to the movie. The illuminated Supertrees and Garden Rhapsody show recreate the magical atmosphere of Colin and Araminta’s wedding reception.

📸 Summary

💦 Iconic Water Features

After visiting Singapore, I’m convinced water is one of the city’s defining design elements. From arriving beneath the world’s tallest indoor waterfall at Jewel Changi to the Cloud Forest cascade, Marina Bay Sands Infinity Pool, Merlion, Rain Oculus, Spectra Light & Water Show, and even gondolas floating through the luxurious Shoppes, water is woven into nearly every iconic experience. Singapore doesn’t just use water as a feature, it turns it into art, architecture, entertainment, and identity.

✨ Spectra Light & Water Show

Set against the backdrop of MBS, Spectra combines dancing fountains, lasers, projections, and music into a free nighttime show that lights up Marina Bay. While the technology is impressive, what makes the experience special is the setting itself, with Singapore’s skyline reflecting across the water as the show unfolds. Arrive early if you want a good viewing spot.
