⚔️ Minnesota Renaissance Festival: Medieval Mayhem in Minnesota

The Minnesota Renaissance Festival is a sprawling medieval playground packed with knights, performers, fantasy attractions, artisan shops, and plenty of wonderfully weird Ren Fest energy. During our visit, we watched Danger Committee hurl knives, laughed through the antics of Puke & Snot, caught sword fights and armored combat, explored a dungeon and hobbit hole, spotted an underwater mermaid, caught a birds of prey demo, and Scott took his first elephant ride. We also tried a crossbow for the first time, earning our way into a special pirate society, cheered on the joust, posed on the Iron Throne, and fueled up on turkey legs and cheese curds. With so much packed into one kingdom, Minnesota easily stands out as one of the most varied and entertaining Ren Fests we’ve visited.

⚔️ Texas Renaissance Festival: Everything’s Bigger in the Kingdom

Everything really is bigger in Texas – including the Renaissance Festival. The Texas Renaissance Festival (TRF) sprawls across a massive permanent village packed with medieval architecture, fantasy-themed shops, oversized pirate ships, creative costumes, and over-the-top entertainment. Of all the Ren Fests we’ve visited, Texas felt the most like stepping into a full-fledged fantasy kingdom rather than simply attending a festival. We loved exploring the elaborate grounds, cheering through the joust, admiring the creative costumes, and ending the night with a Fire Show and Royal Fireworks – a finale unlike anything we’ve experienced at another faire. With so much to see, one day disappears faster than you can say huzzah!

⚔️ St. Louis Renaissance Festival: Huzzah for Medieval Mayhem

Hear ye, hear ye! Each fall, the St. Louis Renaissance Festival transforms the woods of Wentzville into a kingdom of knights, fairies, performers, and plenty of medieval mischief. Tucked beneath the trees, the festival has a Sherwood Forest feel that sets it apart from the other Ren Fests we’ve visited – and all that glorious shade is especially welcome when Missouri refuses to acknowledge that summer is over. Some of our favorite memories have been cheering through the jousts, tearing into giant turkey legs, sitting on the Iron Throne, and showing up in increasingly elaborate costumes we’ve crafted. The festival has evolved over the years, but the wooded setting, themed weekends, costumes, and medieval mayhem keep us returning to our hometown kingdom.

🛝 City Museum St. Louis: Where Art, Engineering & Adventure Collide

City Museum is hands down our favorite attraction in St. Louis because it combines art, engineering, imagination, and pure fun in a way we haven’t found anywhere else. Nearly every corner feels like someone asked, “What if we turned this into something you could climb through?” – and then actually built it. We love wandering past the giant whale sculpture, crawling through the twisting Enchanted Caves (especially when the organ is playing during Halloween), exploring the driftwood-like Treehouse, and climbing through the suspended airplanes, firetruck, and castle towers of MonstroCity. Built from salvaged materials and overflowing with creativity, City Museum isn’t just a place to look at art – it’s a place to climb, crawl, slide, and play right through it.

🕸️ Our Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Movie Night – 3D Prints, Pizza & Brand New Day

Not every adventure requires a plane ticket. Sometimes all it takes is a little filament, a themed dinner, and a trip to the theater. To celebrate Spider-Man: Brand New Day, we put together a simple movie night with custom shirts, 3D-printed props, Spider-Man-inspired food, and just enough web-slinging chaos to make the evening feel a little more spectacular. The movie was a hit, and the Spider-Man and Punisher banter was easily one of my favorite parts.

🇬🇹 One Week in Guatemala: Antigua, Hobbitenango & Lake Atitlán

Our 7-day Guatemala trip packed in volcano hikes, colorful streets, a night in a hobbit hole, and four unforgettable nights on Lake Atitlán. We began in Antigua, continued to the whimsical mountain world of Hobbitenango, and finished at Casa Floresta, where we explored the lake by boat, tackled two scenic hikes, and slowed down beneath the volcanoes. This itinerary shares the route we actually followed, along with the highlights, logistics, rainy-season realities, and lessons we’d use to plan it even better next time.

Antigua Guatemala Guide: Rainy Season Tips & Things to Do

Antigua was the perfect first chapter of our Guatemala trip, blending colorful colonial streets, historic churches, lush courtyards, excellent restaurants, and memorable coffee and chocolate experiences into one incredibly walkable city. We explored the historic center, visited La Merced and the Santa Catalina Arch, toured Caoba Farms, made chocolate at ChocoMuseo, and enjoyed some of our favorite meals of the trip. Rainy-season clouds completely hid the volcanoes during our stay, but Antigua still had plenty to offer with its atmospheric streets, cozy cafés, hands-on experiences, fantastic restaurants, and easy access to adventures like Pacaya Volcano and Hobbitenango.

🌋 Pacaya Volcano Hike Guide: Lava Fields, Marshmallows & Rainy Season Tips

Hiking to Pacaya volcano was our favorite experience of our Guatemala trip. The first uphill stretch was definitely a grind, but reaching the volcanic landscape with sweeping views of Pacaya, Fuego, Acatenango, and Agua made every step worthwhile. Between the black lava fields, dramatic clouds drifting around the peaks, colorful marshmallows “roasting” in geothermal vents, and spectacular close-up views of Pacaya on the hike down, it offered the perfect mix of adventure and scenery. Compared with Guatemala’s famous multi-day volcano treks, Pacaya is an easy day trip from Antigua, but it still feels like a true volcanic adventure.

Staying Overnight at Hobbitenango: Hobbit Holes, Volcano Views & Honest Review

Staying overnight at Hobbitenango was one of the most memorable and imaginative experiences of our Guatemala trip. As huge Lord of the Rings fans, sleeping in themed hobbit holes felt like stepping into a mountain-top fantasy world, complete with volcano views, whimsical photo spots, elvish pavilions, cozy tavern-style welcome drinks, and early access to the park before the daytime crowds arrived. The casitas were absolutely the highlight, each with its own personality, beautiful details, and storybook charm. While there were a few things we wish had gone more smoothly, especially with service, luggage logistics, fireplace ventilation, and activity safety, the creativity, scenery, and immersive atmosphere made Hobbitenango a truly unforgettable visit. If you’re considering an overnight stay, here are our biggest tips and takeaways.

Building Our Woodland Elf & Legolas Cosplays for Enchanticon’s Enchanted Forest Ball

Our woodland elf and Legolas-inspired cosplays came together through a mix of pieces we already owned and a handful of new 3D-printed details. Scott’s costume centered around a Legolas bow and quiver, while I added a printed tiara, elf earcuffs, and vine cuff bracelets to build out my own forest elf look. Most of the new pieces were created within a week, making this less of a long-term build and more of a quick fantasy transformation for Enchanticon’s Enchanted Forest Ball.
