🪄Hogwarts Professors Reimagined: Creating McGonagall’s Cat and Lupin’s Werewolf Cosplays

This Halloween, we stepped into the wizarding world as two of our favorite Hogwarts professors – Minerva McGonagall and Remus Lupin – as part of a full family costume that also featured Professor Trelawney and a Ravenclaw student. Since both of our chosen professors transform into animals, I combined 3D printing, LEDs, and a touch of transfiguration magic to create a glowing green-eyed cat mask for McGonagall and a fierce werewolf mask for Lupin, capturing their Animagus and full-moon transformations.

🪄Harry Potter Halloween Magic – A Spellbinding Home Transformation

Halloween at the Perdue Palace got a full dose of wizarding wonder this year with a Harry Potter transformation straight out of Hogwarts. ✨ From the moment you step inside, floating candles flicker overhead while flying letters swirl from the fireplace and a broom chases enchanted keys through the air. The Goblet of Fire casts an eerie glow beside witches cauldrons, apothecary potions, and a rather ridiculous wand collection that would make Ollivander himself jealous. 3D-printed details bring the magic to life – from the Nimbus 2000 and sorting hats to keys, wands, and spellbinding props. Throughout the house, you’ll spot familiar relics like Hedwig, the golden dragon egg, the flying car caught in the whomping willow, Hagrid and Harry on the motorbike, a time-turner, and even Fluffy guarding the sorcerer’s stone. Many of these pieces were repurposed from our Christmas decor – because with a little creativity (and a touch of Lumos), holiday sparkle transforms beautifully into Halloween sorcery.

Lucerne in an Evening – Chapel Bridge, Musegg, Altstadt & Lake Promenade

We traded Matterhorn reflections for lake bridges as we took the scenic train from Zermatt to Lucerne and headed straight for Kapellbrücke – a 14th-century covered wooden bridge lined with flowers and historic paintings beside the octagonal Water Tower – over the Reuss. From there we climbed the Musegg Wall for lake and Alps views, then wandered the Altstadt. As sunset lit the river, we settled onto the waterfront at Pfistern to enjoy the Lucerne specialty – Lozärner Fritschi-Paschtet – and watch boats and swans drift by. After dusk, we admired the Lion Monument beside its still pond and closed the night along the Lake Lucerne beneath grand hotels like the Schweizerhof with swans skimming through the glassy water.

🏔️ Riffelsee Reflections of the Matterhorn – Hiking Gornergrat to Riffelberg

Our morning on the Gornergrat route was the perfect finale to our time in Zermatt – a mix of iconic views, peaceful trails, and a few surprises along the way. We said goodbye to Switzerland in grand fashion with a ride on the historic Gornergrat Railway, the highest open-air railway in Europe, climbing to the 3,089 m summit where the Matterhorn and Gorner Glacier stretched out before us in a panorama so vast it hardly felt real. After an impromptu snowball fight and dozens of glacier photos, we began our downhill descent toward Riffelberg, pausing at Riffelsee for the classic reflection shot and then discovering an even quieter second lake just beyond it that completely stole our hearts. The path wound through rocky terrain, ending with a relaxed drink on the terrace at Riffelberg Station, the Matterhorn still watching over us one last time before our train back to Zermatt and onward to Lucerne.

❄️ Chasing the Matterhorn – Glacier Trail to Furi Bridge Adventures

Our time in Zermatt tested both patience and flexibility as the Matterhorn played hide-and-seek behind stubborn clouds. For our last full day, we had planned to hike up to the Hörnlihütte base camp, the Matterhorn’s iconic mountain hut, for what would have been our most demanding hike of the trip. But with low visibility in the morning, we spent hours watching webcams and waiting for the skies to clear. By the time the fog began to lift, we made the call to skip the steep Hörnlihütte ascent and instead focus on the Matterhorn Glacier Trail – and it turned out to be the right decision. Dressed warmly, we rode the gondola up to Trockener Steg at nearly 10,000 feet and stepped into a stark, otherworldly landscape of gray rock and glacial ice, hiking toward the shadowed face of the Matterhorn that seemed close enough to touch. We paused at a scenic spot for a snack, waiting nearly an hour for the clouds to break, and though the summit never fully revealed itself, the drama of the shifting light made it unforgettable. As afternoon turned late, we hurried down toward Schwarzsee, catching the gondola partway and making a quick detour in Furi to cross the suspension bridge, a fun and scenic bonus before the day’s final dash. Racing against the clock for the last gondola, we narrowly avoided getting stranded – thanks to a kind guard who let us ride the freight cable car back down to Zermatt. That evening, we celebrated our alpine adventure with fondue at sunset at Old Zermatt, just steps from the Kirchbrücke Bridge, as the Matterhorn glowed gold and rose in the fading light – an unforgettable finale to our time in Switzerland.

Astrid & Hiccup Cosplay – How to Train Your Dragon at the Renaissance Festival

Creating our adult Astrid and Hiccup cosplays was such a fun follow-up project after making the kids’ versions! I was able to repurpose most of the props from my niece’s Astrid costume – including the battle axe, skirt, and armbands – and just scaled up a few essentials like the shoulder armor and headband to fit an adult size. It was a perfect blend of recycling and reimagining, giving the pieces a second life while keeping that authentic How to Train Your Dragon Viking style. Pairing it with Scott’s Hiccup made the whole cosplay duo come together perfectly – two dragon riders ready for adventure at the St. Louis Renaissance Festival.

🏔️ Blauherd to Sunnegga – A Scenic Day on Zermatt’s 5 Lakes and Gourmet Trail

Our day from Blauherd to Sunnegga perfectly blended alpine beauty, adventure, and a touch of Swiss unpredictability. We began on the Crystal Trail, hiking through shifting fog to reach Stellisee, where the clouds briefly lifted to reveal a fleeting but magical Matterhorn reflection before rolling back in. From there, we climbed to Fluhalp, a cozy alpine hut perched above the lake and admired the Matterhorn half-veiled in clouds. We then swapped hiking boots for mountain carts, racing down from Blauherd to Sunnegga in a fast, winding run that felt straight out of Mario Kart. From there, we followed the Gourmet Trail to Chez Vrony for a scenic lunch in furry recliners overlooking alpine meadows and chalets, with the Matterhorn playing hide-and-seek in the clouds. The afternoon brought light rain as we continued along the 5-Lakes Trail, passing Grindjisee, GrĂĽnsee, Moosjisee, and Leisee, where mist softened the turquoise waters and wildflowers shimmered with raindrops. We ended the day with kickbikes from Sunnegga to Zermatt, gliding through forest trails toward the valley. Even with the drizzle, it was a day of lakes, laughter, and unforgettable alpine charm.

🌊 Hiking to Gorner Gorge & Blatten from Zermatt

After days of sunshine in Lauterbrunnen, we woke to steady rain and traded sweeping alpine views for a cozy travel day on one of Switzerland’s most scenic rail routes. The ride from Lauterbrunnen to Zermatt wound through misty valleys, rushing rivers, and mountain passes that felt straight out of a storybook – proof that even in the rain, Switzerland knows how to put on a show. Once in Zermatt, we settled into Hotel Parnass along the river and set out to explore the Gorner Gorge, where wooden walkways cling to the cliffs above roaring turquoise water that’s even more dramatic after rainfall. From there, the trail continued through the fairytale hamlet of Blatten, filled with centuries-old mazots and alpine chapels, before looping back toward town along the fragrant Ricola Herb Garden path. We ended the day warm and dry, savoring fondue at Saycheese!, surrounded by alpine charm and the promise of clearer skies ahead.

Framed by the mighty Matterhorn, Zermatt feels lifted straight from a postcard – car-free, cozy, and surrounded by peaks that catch the light in ways that hardly seem real. Our days here were a blend of patience and reward, watching clouds toy with the summit before revealing that perfect, iconic view. Beyond its breathtaking scenery, Zermatt was the perfect base for alpine adventures, with easy access to some of Switzerland’s most stunning trails. We hiked through Gorner Gorge to Blatten, followed the Crystal Trail for perfect Stellisee reflections, and completed the 5-Lakes Trail with its mix of turquoise waters and alpine meadows. 💦 Where Waterfalls Meet Wanderlust – Swiss Adventure Based in Lauterbrunnen

Lauterbrunnen is the heart of Switzerland’s storybook scenery – a narrow U-shaped valley flanked by sheer cliffs and dotted with 72 waterfalls, alpine chalets, and cow-dotted meadows that inspired Tolkien’s Rivendell. The village itself is small but perfectly positioned between Mürren, Wengen, and Grindelwald, making it an ideal base for exploring the Jungfrau region and beyond. From here, we set out on some of our favorite adventures – hiking from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg via the Panorama Trail and the Eiger Trail, tackling the ridge hike from Schynige Platte to Grindelwald First, riding the gondola to Oeschinensee for the lake loop and mountain toboggan, and ending with a ferry ride across Lake Thun. The charming main street is lined with cafés, shops, and the phenomenal Hotel Oberland Restaurant, while chalets like our Nussbaumerhaus 3 Airbnb offer cozy kitchens and patios overlooking the valley. Whether chasing alpine peaks or unwinding beneath waterfalls, Lauterbrunnen is the perfect mix of adventure and tranquility.
