Phuket was the perfect next stop on our Thailand adventure, offering beautiful beaches, lively coastal towns, and easy access to some of the countryβs most spectacular islands. In just three nights, we experienced the absolute chaos of Songkran in Patong, explored the dramatic limestone scenery of Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island, and visited the famous Maya Bay in the Phi Phi Islands. We stayed at Avista Hideaway Phuket Patong, a quieter hillside retreat with hiking access to the beautiful Freedom Beach, and celebrated Scottβs birthday with one of our favorite meals of the entire trip at Ta Khai, a White Lotus filming location. With two island tours requiring pickups around 5:00 AM, this was anything but a relaxing beach getaway, but it became one of the most adventure-packed stops of our Asia trip!
ποΈ Itinerary: Three Days in Phuket
Our three-night Phuket itinerary was ambitious, with Songkran, two early-bird island tours, and a hike to Freedom Beach. While we managed to squeeze in most of our must-see experiences, we would recommend at least four nights in Phuket. An extra day would have given us more time to enjoy Patong Beach, explore Phuket Old Town, and visit the Big Buddha without feeling quite so rushed. Hereβs how we made the most of our April 13β16, 2026 visit, including the transportation, reservations, and logistics that helped everything come together.

π‘ Tips: Making the Most of Phuket
- π¨ Choose Your Patong Location Carefully: Avista Hideaway offered a peaceful escape from the chaos, but its steep hillside location meant relying on Grab or tuk-tuks rather than walking into town.
- π Book Early-Bird Island Tours: Both of our island excursions required pickups around 5:00 AM, but arriving early helped us avoid the worst crowds. Maya Bay was still surprisingly busy even at 7:20 AM!
- π¬ Combine Island Hopping with Movie Magic: Phuket makes an excellent base for visiting both James Bond Island and Maya Bay, two of Thailandβs most famous filming locations. We loved seeing the real scenery behind The Man with the Golden Gun and The Beach.
- π¦ Check Songkran Dates: Celebrations vary by location, so confirm when the biggest water fights happen. We arrived for Patongβs final major day and were glad we didnβt miss it!
- π Build Extra Time Into Phuket Transfers: Phuket is larger than it looks on a map, and traffic can make airport, marina, and Patong transfers surprisingly long.
- 𧴠Pack for Long Boat Days: Sunscreen, a hat, water, and lightweight sun protection were especially useful with several hours spent on the water.
- π₯οΈ Donβt Overload Boat-Tour Days: Both excursions were essentially full-day experiences despite getting back in the afternoon. Leaving the evening flexible made the early starts much easier.
- ποΈ Keep Freedom Beach Flexible: We skipped it during Songkran and hiked from Avista Hideaway after our Phi Phi tour instead. The hike is short but steep, especially on the return. Scott managed it in flip-flops, while I wore hiking sandals, but footwear with good traction is recommended!
- π Be Willing to Drop Lower-Priority Stops: We considered Big Buddha and Phuket Old Town but ultimately prioritized Songkran, the island tours, and Freedom Beach during our short stay.
πΈ Phuket: Three Days of Adventure
π¨ Avista Hideaway: Our Hillside Hideaway
We chose Avista Hideaway Phuket Patong mainly for its location and convenience, especially the easy access to the hike down to Freedom Beach, gluten-free options at its restaurants, and proximity to Patong, Bangla Road, and Ta Khai. Check-in started with a refreshing butterfly pea tea welcome drink and the fun tradition of ringing the resort gong. Our jungle-view room did not have much of a view, but it was comfortable, and the pool near our room had a beautiful sunset outlook. We also enjoyed having several restaurants on-site, with Vista serving our favorite food at the resort, plus Sizzle for sunset drinks and dinner and the evening fire show near the Radiant Sun Sculpture. The biggest downside was the resortβs steep hillside layout. Getting to and from our room often meant a long steep walk or waiting for a golf cart, and we still needed a Grab or tuk-tuk to go almost anywhere off property. We had originally thought we might walk into Patong, but between the steep roads and Phuket heat, that idea disappeared pretty quickly. Overall, Avista worked well as a quieter base for our packed itinerary, but it was more convenient for Freedom Beach and resort amenities than for exploring Patong on foot.
π₯ Avista Highlights
π¦ Patong Songkran: Making a Splash on Bangla Road
After celebrating Songkran on Bangkokβs legendary Khao San Road the night before, we arrived in Phuket just in time for another round of water-fight madness! Patong Beach and Bangla Road were packed with water guns, buckets, music, and celebrations, giving us two completely different experiences of Thailandβs biggest festival in two of its most famous party destinations. We ditched our original sightseeing plans to join the chaos, and it became one of the wildest highlights of our entire Asia trip.

ποΈ Freedom Beach: Paradise Is Worth the Hike
Tucked into a jungle-covered cove south of Patong, Freedom Beach is considered one of Phuketβs most beautiful beaches and was a major reason we chose to stay at Avista Hideaway. We originally planned to visit by longtail boat, but Songkran changed our plans, so we squeezed in the hike after our Phi Phi tour instead. The 0.5-mile hike from Avista descends steeply through the jungle along rocky paths and stairs, with beautiful overlooks of the crescent-shaped beach below. The descent was manageable, but the climb back was definitely a workout! We even met an adorable beach cat along the way. π»
π Hiking Stats: The Climb Back to Reality
Time:Β 10:22 min moving, 13:10 min total going up (~30 min round-trip; allow extra time for photos)
Distance:Β 0.45 miles each way; 0.9 miles round-trip
Max Elevation:Β 338 ft
Elevation Change: 292 ft each way
Difficulty:Β Moderate, with steep paths and stairs
Directions: From Avista Hideaway Phuket Patong, follow the road toward Freedom Beach until you reach the trail entrance. The route descends steeply through tropical jungle along a combination of uneven dirt paths and stairs, with several scenic overlooks offering beautiful views of the crescent-shaped beach below. There is a small entrance fee so bring some THB before continuing down to the beach. Once at the bottom, enjoy the white sand, turquoise water, and longtail boats offshore before retracing your steps uphill to the resort. The hike is ~0.5 miles each way and takes about 15 minutes. Allow extra time for photos and the steeper return climb.

ποΈ Freedom Beach: A Little Slice of Paradise
At the bottom, Freedom Beach rewarded us with soft white sand, clear turquoise water, palm-covered hills, and traditional longtail boats floating offshore. It felt like a little tropical escape compared with the busy beaches around Patong, although it certainly wasnβt deserted during our afternoon visit. We spent some time swimming, reading, and relaxing on the beach, with a few rustic spots nearby for drinks and snacks. After two packed days of island hopping, it was the perfect way to enjoy a little downtime before our final evening in Phuket.

π½οΈ Phuket Restaurants: From Rooftops to The White Lotus
With two 5:00 AM tour starts and a packed Songkran schedule, we didnβt venture far for most of our meals in Phuket. Staying at Avista Hideaway made that easy, with several restaurants right at the resort, while Ta Khai was just a Grab away for Scottβs birthday dinner. As with the rest of Thailand, we had to be careful navigating gluten-free dining, so having convenient options near our hotel made our already busy Phuket itinerary much easier.
π¬ Ta Khai: A White Lotus Birthday
We celebrated Scottβs birthday at Ta Khai at Rosewood Phuket, which was probably our favorite meal of the entire Asia trip! The restaurant features a beautiful lily pond seen in The White Lotus, and we were thrilled when the staff seated us at the exact table where the three girlfriends dined in Season 3, complete with the distinctive chandeliers behind us. The cocktails, beautifully presented boat appetizer, and curry were fantastic, with incredibly fresh ingredients throughout. The evening ended with a thoughtful gluten-free birthday surprise: a gorgeous βcakeβ made entirely of fresh fruit. Unfortunately, Scott doesnβt particularly like fruit! π We couldnβt stop laughing, but it was an incredibly sweet gesture that made his birthday dinner even more memorable.

π Sizzle Rooftop: Sunset with a Side of Surprise
Sizzle Rooftop at Avista Hideaway was more about the atmosphere than the food. We enjoyed a gorgeous sunset, decent cocktails, and a convenient first-night dinner after the Songkran madness, although my fish was frustratingly full of difficult-to-remove bones. The highlight was Scottβs surprise birthday cake, encased in chocolate and topped with a sparkler that he had to crack open with a wooden mallet. Unfortunately, despite knowing about his celiac disease, the cake wasnβt gluten-free! π At least he got to enjoy the dramatic reveal, even if he couldnβt eat the prize. Between the sunset, fire show, and birthday entertainment, it was still a memorable evening.
π₯ Fire Show: Dinner with a Spark
We caught our first fire show of the trip while having dinner at Sizzle at Avista Hideaway. The setup is a little unusual because you need to walk over to the high-top railing along the far-right side of the restaurant for a good view, but the Radiant Sun Sculpture creates a really unique foreground, while the sunset made for a gorgeous backdrop. We really enjoyed it at the time, although after seeing the much more elaborate fire shows in Koh Tao and Koh Samui, this ended up being the most basic of the three. Still, it was a fun and convenient addition to our first night in Phuket.

π΄ Vista: A Gluten-Free Dinner Without the Fuss
After our second 5:00 AM island tour and an afternoon hike to Freedom Beach, we enjoyed dinner at Vista, Avista Hideawayβs main restaurant. Vista, Avista Hideawayβs main restaurant, ended up serving our favorite food at the resort, with delicious Thai dishes and gluten-free options for Scott. I especially loved the beautiful blue decor and dramatic lighting, which gave the restaurant a unique atmosphere. Between the tasty food, colorful surroundings, and convenience, Vista was a great choice for our final evening in Phuket!
ποΈ Island Hopping: From James Bond to The Beach
Our two island tours were among the biggest highlights of Phuket, each offering a completely different adventure. For Scottβs birthday, we explored Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island, the iconic filming location from The Man with the Golden Gun, one of his favorite 007 movies growing up. The island itself was incredible, but the countless limestone formations throughout the bay were just as breathtaking. The following morning, we headed to the Phi Phi Islands and Maya Bay, made famous by Leonardo DiCaprioβs The Beach. Between the spectacular sunrise, dramatic cliffs, turquoise lagoons, and incredible scenery, both tours were worth the painfully early wake-ups!

π Transfer, Tour & Guide Info
- π Klook Airport Transfers: We prebooked private SUV transfers between Bangkok, Phuket Airport, Avista Hideaway, and the airport again when departing. Prebooking was especially helpful during Songkran and for our early departure.
- π€ Siam Adventure World: We booked the Early Bird James Bond & Beyond Tour, which included hotel transportation, a light marina breakfast, boat transportation, activities, and lunch.
- π₯οΈ Simba Sea Trips: We booked the Luxury Small Group Phi Phi Sunrise Tour from Phuket, including early hotel pickup, marina breakfast, the Phi Phi itinerary, snorkeling stops, and lunch after returning to Phuket.
- π Grab: Useful for shorter trips around Patong and for evenings when the resort shuttle schedule did not line up with our plans.
- πΊ Tuk-Tuks: We took a tuk-tuk from Bangla Road back to Avista Hideaway, a fun and convenient alternative to Grab after exploring Patong.
