⛰️ John-Suwan Viewpoint: Hiking Southern Koh Tao

Koh Tao is known for its incredible coastal scenery, and John-Suwan Viewpoint is one of the island’s most iconic hiking destinations. We spent an afternoon exploring the southern tip of Koh Tao, combining two panoramic viewpoints, Sun Suwan and John-Suwan, with a visit to Freedom 2 Beach. The short hikes rewarded us with sweeping views of turquoise bays, lush jungle, and dramatic coastline. With several nearby beaches and trails, this is a great area to spend a few hours exploring.

🗓️ Itinerary: Our Afternoon Hiking Southern Koh Tao

We dedicated the late afternoon of our second Koh Tao day (April 17, 2026) to explore the island’s southern viewpoints and beaches. Starting around 4 PM gave us time to visit both viewpoints and Freedom 2 Beach before hiking back to our resort. Travelers with more time can extend the adventure to Freedom 1 Beach and Taa Toh Lagoon.

  • 🛻 4:00 PM – Transfer from View Point Resort to trailhead (arranged through resort)
  • ⛰️ 4:10 PM – Hike up to Sun Suwan Viewpoint (50 THB/person)
  • ⛰️ 4:30 PM – Hike up to John-Suwan Viewpoint via Chalok Bay overlook (100 THB/person)
  • 🏝️ 5:10 PM – Hike down to Freedom 2 Beach to relax and swim
  • Optional: Hike to Freedom 1 Beach and Taa Toh Lagoon
  • 🥾 5:30 PM – Hike back to View Point Resort (~1.2 mi, 35 min)

💡 Tips: Planning Your John-Suwan Viewpoint Hike

  • ⛰️ Consider Skipping Sun Suwan: In hindsight, we’d recommend focusing on John-Suwan. Sun Suwan required an additional uphill hike and entrance fee, and the views weren’t worth the extra exertion, especially given the heat.
  • 🥾 Wear Proper Shoes: John-Suwan has steep, rocky sections with ropes to assist with climbing. Wear shoes with good traction.
  • ☀️ Don’t Underestimate the Heat: Despite hiking later in the afternoon, I experienced heat exhaustion that evening. Bring plenty of water, take breaks, and avoid combining too many hikes in one day.
  • 💰 Carry Cash: We paid 50 THB for Sun Suwan and 100 THB for John-Suwan per person.
  • 🗺️ Beware of AllTrails Loops: Some routes suggest a loop connecting Freedom 2 Beach to Freedom 1 Beach, but we couldn’t find a walking trail. We even tested the water, but it was too deep to safely cross with our backpacks. Plan on an out-and-back hike rather than relying on the mapped loop.
  • 🌅 Allow Enough Daylight: Starting around 4 PM worked for visiting both viewpoints and Freedom 2 Beach, but we ran out of time for additional stops. Start earlier if you want to explore more beaches, and allow extra time for photos.

🥾 Hiking Southern Koh Tao: Viewpoints and Freedom 2

We combined two of southern Koh Tao’s scenic viewpoints with a visit to Freedom 2 Beach, experiencing everything from steep jungle trails and rocky climbs to spectacular coastal panoramas. Although the hikes were relatively short, the tropical heat made them more challenging than expected. John-Suwan was the clear highlight, rewarding us with some of our favorite views on the island!

From the base, we walked ~0.2 mile to the John-Suwan trailhead and climbed to the summit (~0.3 mile, 20 minutes round trip), stopping at the Chalok Bay overlook. ⛰️ Sun Suwan Viewpoint: A Scenic First Stop

We began our afternoon with a short but steep uphill hike to Sun Suwan Viewpoint (50 THB/person), overlooking Koh Tao’s southern coastline. While the views were beautiful, we found them less impressive than those at John-Suwan. In hindsight, we’d skip this additional climb and save our energy for the more spectacular viewpoint ahead.

🌴 John-Suwan Viewpoint: Koh Tao’s Iconic Panorama

John-Suwan Viewpoint offers spectacular panoramic views of Shark Bay and Chalok Baan Kao Bay on opposite sides of a narrow, jungle-covered peninsula. Although relatively short, the trail includes steep, rocky sections with ropes to assist with climbing. Along the way, we stopped at a viewpoint overlooking Chalok Bay before reaching the summit. The breathtaking scenery made this one of our favorite viewpoints on Koh Tao!

🏝️ Freedom 2 Beach: A Tropical Detour

After exploring the viewpoints, we descended to Freedom 2 Beach (~0.2 mile, 10 minutes round trip). We even swam out to investigate whether we could reach Freedom 1 Beach, but the water was too deep to safely cross with our backpacks. Although some AllTrails routes suggest a loop connecting the beaches, we couldn’t find a direct walking trail. Plan on an out-and-back hike unless you’re prepared to swim or snorkel between them.

🥾 More to Explore: Freedom 1 Beach & Taa Toh Lagoon

If you have additional time, consider exploring Freedom 1 Beach and Taa Toh Lagoon. Although both are nearby, we couldn’t find a direct walking connection from Freedom 2 Beach, so plan your route carefully rather than assuming you can complete a loop. We skipped these additional stops to make it back to our resort before sunset.

📍 Getting There: Transportation & Trail Access

Koh Tao’s steep, winding roads mean many resorts and transfer companies use pickup trucks to transport visitors around the island. We arranged a ride in the back of a truck through View Point Resort to reach the Sun Suwan trailhead. Although you can hike there from the resort, we’d already covered much of the same route on our morning hike to Shark Bay and wanted to conserve our energy. After exploring both viewpoints and Freedom 2 Beach, we hiked approximately 1.2 miles back to our resort.
