πŸ”« James Bond Island from Phuket: An Early-Bird Phang Nga Bay Adventure

James Bond Island may have been the famous name that got our attention, but it ended up being just one small part of an incredible day exploring Phang Nga Bay. We booked the Early Bird James Bond & Beyond Tour with Siam Adventure World, which combined caves, hidden lagoons, dramatic limestone islands, canoeing, a floating village, an amazing viewpoint, and a beach stop into one very full day. The 5:00 AM pickup was painful, especially since it was Scott’s birthday, but getting to James Bond Island early and experiencing so much beyond the famous movie location made it worth the alarm.

πŸ—“οΈ Itinerary: James Bond Island & Beyond

We booked the Early Bird James Bond & Beyond Tour by Siam Adventure World for Scott’s birthday excursion April 14, 2026. Our tour started before sunrise and packed an impressive amount into the day. One of the biggest reasons we chose the early-bird option was to reach James Bond Island before the larger tour groups, but several of the less-famous stops ended up being just as memorable.

  • 🚀 5:00 AM – Transfer to Royal Phuket Marina

πŸ’‘ Tips: Your Mission Briefing for James Bond Island

  • πŸŒ… Go Early: The 5:00 AM pickup wasn’t fun, but arriving at James Bond Island around 8:00 AM meant experiencing it before many of the larger tour groups arrived.
  • 🚀 Choose a Tour That Goes Beyond James Bond Island: The famous island was a fun stop, but Phang Nga Bay’s caves, canoeing, floating village, viewpoint, and limestone scenery made the overall tour special.
  • 🧴 Pack for a Full Day Outside: Bring sunscreen, a hat, mosquito repellent, water, and lightweight sun protection. We also wore mosquito-treated clothing.
  • πŸ‘Ÿ Wear Shoes That Can Handle Multiple Activities: The day involved boats, caves, walking, canoeing, viewpoints, and beaches rather than one simple island stop.
  • ⏱️ Sightsee Before Shopping: Our 30-minute stop on James Bond Island went fast, especially with souvenir vendors and price negotiating. Explore the overlooks and island first, then shop with whatever time remains.
  • πŸ“Έ Don’t Underestimate Samet Nangshe: The panoramic view across Phang Nga Bay was completely different from seeing the limestone formations at water level and made the stop well worth including.
  • πŸ›Ά Canoeing Isn’t the Same as Kayaking: At Tham Lod Nai, we could focus on the scenery while a local paddler guided the canoe through the mangroves and caves.
  • 🏝️ Expect a Busy Day: This isn’t really a relaxing island excursion until the final beach stop. Most of the tour is spent moving between different experiences around Phang Nga Bay.

🚀 Cruising Phang Nga Bay: The Siam Adventure World Experience

A big part of what made our Siam Adventure World Early Bird James Bond & Beyond Tour so enjoyable was the boat ride itself. We traveled aboard a spacious high-speed catamaran, with comfortable covered seating, lounger-style seats on the upper deck, and some of our favorite seats right at the front for wide-open views. Our tour never felt crowded, so we could easily move around the boat and grab whichever spot offered the best view. Leaving so early also gave us a beautiful sunrise from the water, followed by increasingly dramatic views as we cruised among the towering limestone karsts of Phang Nga Bay. With plenty of space to relax and scenery almost the entire way, the boat ride felt like part of the tour rather than just transportation between stops.

🍦 Koh Panak: Inside the Ice Cream Cave

Our first stop in Ao Phang Nga National Park was Koh Panak’s Ice Cream Cave, which we were able to explore during high tide with hard hats and flashlights provided by our tour. Our guide explained that the cave isn’t always accessible because water levels can sometimes get too high to safely enter. Inside, our flashlights revealed sparkling calcite crystals, stalactites and stalagmites, including the formations that give the cave its delicious nickname. The crystals form as mineral-rich water moves through the limestone, gradually leaving behind calcium carbonate deposits that build up over thousands of years. After walking through the cavern, we reached an opening overlooking a hidden lagoon surrounded by towering limestone cliffs, making this a pretty spectacular first stop in Phang Nga Bay.

🎬 James Bond Island: The Man with the Golden Gun

The day’s celebrity was Khao Phing Kan, better known as James Bond Island after appearing in the 1974 movie The Man with the Golden Gun. It was an especially fitting stop for Scott’s 39th birthday, since he came prepared in his β€œLicense to Celebrate – Mission 39: James Bond Island” shirt I made him. We arrived around 8:10 AM and had roughly 30 minutes to explore and take photos. The recognizable limestone formation Khao Tapu rises dramatically from the water just offshore, and arriving early made this heavily visited location much more enjoyable.

πŸ“Έ Comparison Shots: Back-to-Back Gun Pose

Recreating scenes from The Man with the Golden Gun at James Bond Island was another surprisingly tricky photo challenge. Khao Tapu, the iconic limestone rock behind us, makes it easy to identify the filming location, but matching the movie’s exact perspective takes some experimenting because the shape and position of the rock changes dramatically depending on where you stand. We tried recreating the famous back-to-back Bond and Scaramanga pose as well as a closer shot with the golden gun, moving around until the surrounding cliffs lined up as closely as possible. A nearby vendor even let us borrow her golden toy guns for the photos, and we bought a few souvenirs from her afterward as a thank-you. The biggest trick is to use Khao Tapu and the surrounding cliff edges as reference points, then adjust your position and camera angle until everything lines up.

πŸŒ„ Samet Nangshe Viewpoint: Phang Nga Bay from Above

After seeing the bay from the water, Samet Nangshe Viewpoint completely changed the perspective. We rode up in the back of a truck and spent our stop exploring several photo spots overlooking Phang Nga Bay, including the bright green stairs and a giant heart framing its own slice of the scenery. The sweeping panorama of limestone islands stretching across the water was spectacular and completely different from seeing the formations at sea level. Our stop lasted around 45 minutes including the ride up and down, making this a relatively quick detour for one of the day’s biggest views.

πŸ›Ά Tham Lod Nai: Canoeing Through Caves & Mangroves

At Tham Lod Nai, we switched from the speedboat to small canoes for about 30 minutes of exploring mangroves and limestone caves. Local paddlers did all the work while we sat back and took in the scenery, although β€œsat back” became pretty literal when we reached some of the incredibly low cave passages. πŸ˜‚ We had to duck beneath the limestone as the canoe slipped through tight openings with the rock seemingly just above our heads. Between the narrow spaces, reflections and towering limestone surrounding us, this ended up being one of the most visually interesting parts of the tour.

🏘️ Koh Panyee: A Village on the Water

Our next stop was Koh Panyee, a Muslim fishing village built largely on stilts over the water beneath towering limestone cliffs. We had about an hour for our included buffet lunch at Newfern Restaurant and to explore the village and markets. We had informed Siam in advance about Scott’s celiac disease, and they were able to accommodate him with gluten-free options at the included lunch. From the waterfront, the village feels wide open against the bay and cliffs, but walking farther inside revealed narrow market-lined passages tucked behind the restaurants and waterfront buildings. It added a completely different experience to a day otherwise dominated by natural scenery.

🏝️ Koh Yao Yai: Ending at Panya Beach

After a roughly 50-minute boat ride, we finished the sightseeing portion of the tour at Panya Beach on Koh Yao Yai. We had around 80 minutes to relax on the white-sand beach before beginning the trip back to Phuket. After spending most of the morning moving from one activity to another, ending with actual downtime at the beach was a welcome change of pace. I’m pretty sure I fell asleep on the loungers. πŸ˜‚
