Our 7-day Guatemala trip packed in volcano hikes, colorful streets, a night in a hobbit hole, and four unforgettable nights on Lake Atitlán. We began in Antigua, continued to the whimsical mountain world of Hobbitenango, and finished at Casa Floresta, where we explored the lake by boat, tackled two scenic hikes, and slowed down beneath the volcanoes. This itinerary shares the route we actually followed, along with the highlights, logistics, rainy-season realities, and lessons we’d use to plan it even better next time.

💡 Travel Tips
💰 Money & Payments
- 💵 Bring more cash than you think you need: Guatemala is very cash-friendly, especially for small purchases, tips, souvenirs, boats, local vendors, bathrooms, and smaller restaurants.
- 🏧 Use bank ATMs when possible: In Antigua, we preferred ATMs at the airport and banks like BI, BAC, or BAM. Avoid questionable standalone ATMs, and always decline the machine’s currency conversion.
- 🪙 Carry small bills and coins: Bathrooms, tips, snacks, market purchases, and small boat-related costs are easier when you have smaller denominations.
🚐 Transportation, Logistics & Safety
- 🚐 Private transfers for groups and safety: With a large group, private transport made the trip easier, more comfortable, and safer, especially between Guatemala City, Antigua, Hobbitenango, and Lake Atitlán.
- 🕰️ Do not schedule tight transfers: Roads, rain, traffic, luggage, boats, and group coordination can all take longer than expected, so build in buffer time and avoid plans that depend on everything running perfectly.
- 🧾 Confirm luggage storage: If you need storage before check-in or after checkout, confirm the exact details ahead of time so you’re not stuck hauling bags around.
- 🎟️ Pre-book key experiences, but stay flexible: Tours, cooking classes, and guides are worth booking ahead, but rainy season, road conditions, or safety concerns may require last-minute changes.
- 🥾 Hire private, vetted guides for hikes: We felt most comfortable using trusted guides for our hikes, especially for early starts, changing weather, unfamiliar terrain, and potential bandits.
- 🌙 Be mindful after dark: Stick to well-lit, populated areas at night, avoid traveling alone, and do not wander between towns, docks, or quiet streets without a clear transportation plan.
- 🎒 Keep valuables secure: Use a zipped crossbody or day bag, especially in markets, boats, busy streets, and crowded tourist areas.
- 💧 Drink safe water and pack basic medicine: Stick with bottled or filtered water, confirm whether your lodging provides filtered drinking water, and bring stomach medicine, pain relievers, motion sickness medicine, and first aid care.
- 📱 Download key info offline: Save hotel addresses, WhatsApp contacts, itineraries, and maps before travel days.
- 💬 WhatsApp is essential: Drivers, boat captains, tours, restaurants, and lodging hosts often use WhatsApp, so have it set up before the trip and use this for group communications.
👕 Packing & Clothing
- 🧳 Pack light if you’re moving around: This itinerary included multiple stays, boats, stairs, cobblestones, and transfers, and having carry-on luggage made it much easier than large checked bags.
- 🥾 Bring real hiking shoes: Between Pacaya, Indian Nose, and the La Casa del Mundo lake hike, sturdy shoes were very helpful.
- 🧥 Pack layers: Guatemala’s weather varied a lot by location and time of day, especially between Antigua, Hobbitenango, and Lake Atitlán. Zip-off hiking pants and jackets are helpful.
- ☔ Do not rely on a tiny umbrella alone: A rain jacket or poncho is much more practical for tours, hikes, boats, and walking around towns.
- 🎒 Bring a small day bag: You’ll want something for rain gear, sunscreen, bug spray, water, snacks, cash, camera gear, and layers.
- 🧴 Sunscreen is still necessary in rainy season: Even on cloudy days, the UV exposure can be strong, especially around Lake Atitlán, on boats, and during hikes.
- 🛍️ Leave room for souvenirs: Textiles, coffee, chocolate, and handmade items are tempting, especially around Antigua and Lake Atitlán.
- 🎧 Bring earplugs: Between stray dogs at Hobbitenango and general travel noise, these will help ensure restful sleep.
🌧️ Weather, Hiking & Volcano Views
- 🌧️ Rainy season can seriously affect plans: Build flexibility into your schedule, especially for volcano views, hikes, boat days, and outdoor activities.
- 🌋 Plan for the experience, not just the volcano views: Clouds and rain can completely hide the volcanoes, but Guatemala is still an incredible destination.
- 🌄 Early mornings are usually your best chance for views: For volcanoes, lakes, and hikes, morning is often better than afternoon, especially during rainy season.
- 📸 Plan photo spots early when possible: Popular places like Hobbitenango and scenic lake viewpoints are better before crowds arrive or before afternoon weather rolls in.
- 💛 Expect imperfections and go with the flow: Some of our favorite moments came from the views, people, food, and places themselves, even when the weather or logistics did not go perfectly.
🌮 Food, Groceries & Gluten-Free Travel
- 🍽️ Gluten-free travel requires planning: Guatemala was manageable for gluten-free needs, but not effortless. Be cautious with sauces, fried foods, and cross-contamination.
- 🛒 Grocery stops are helpful early in the trip: Picking up drinks, snacks, breakfast items, and simple backup foods in Antigua and Panajachel made the rest of the trip easier.
- 🍫 Do at least one cultural food experience: Our ChocoMuseo workshop and cooking class at Amigos de Santa Cruz were very memorable parts of the trip.
🚤 Lake Atitlán Tips
- 🌊 Lake Atitlán is best with flexibility: Village-hopping sounds easy, but boats, weather, group pacing, shopping, lunch timing, and lake conditions can all slow things down.
- 🧘 Build in downtime at your villa: Between early hikes, transfers, boats, rain, and group travel, downtime at your villa is not wasted time. This will allow you to enjoy your lakefront villa and amenities like paddle boards, yoga studio, snuggling with cats, and cabanas with volcano views.
- 🏡 Where you stay changes the whole lake experience: Staying somewhere boat-access only can be peaceful and scenic, but it requires more planning for meals and transportation.
- 🚤 Plan Lake Atitlán boat logistics carefully: If you’re staying somewhere boat-access only, think through arrival times, luggage, dinner plans, and how you’ll get back after dark. Pre-arranged boats are especially helpful at night or when traveling with a group.

🔥 Acatenango & Fuego
Acatenango Volcano is one of Guatemala’s most famous hikes, offering the chance to camp overnight across from the constantly erupting Fuego Volcano. We seriously considered adding it to our itinerary, but ultimately decided against it because rainy-season clouds and rain can completely obscure the views after such a strenuous overnight trek. Instead, we chose the Pacaya day hike, which gave us fantastic volcano views with far less time commitment and a much lower risk of being socked in by rainy-season weather. Acatenango is still high on our list, and we’d love to return during the dry season when there’s a much better chance of experiencing Fuego’s nighttime eruptions and sunrise views.
