Hiking to Pacaya volcano was our favorite experience of our Guatemala trip. The first uphill stretch was definitely a grind, but reaching the volcanic landscape with sweeping views of Pacaya, Fuego, Acatenango, and Agua made every step worthwhile. Between the black lava fields, dramatic clouds drifting around the peaks, colorful marshmallows “roasting” in geothermal vents, and spectacular close-up views of Pacaya on the hike down, it offered the perfect mix of adventure and scenery. Compared with Guatemala’s famous multi-day volcano treks, Pacaya is an easy day trip from Antigua, but it still feels like a true volcanic adventure.

💡 Tips
- 🥾 Wear real hiking shoes: The trail can be rocky, dusty, or slippery depending on the season, so this is not the hike for cute shoes.
- 🌧️ Check the weather before committing: Rain and clouds can completely change the experience, especially if you’re hoping for volcano views. The morning tour gives the best chance for views, especially during rainy season.
- 🧥 Bring layers: Even if Antigua feels warm, it can feel cooler and windier as you gain elevation.
- 💧 Carry water and snacks: The hike is not extremely long, but the incline and altitude can make it feel more tiring than expected.
- 🐴 Horses are available: If someone in your group struggles with the incline, horses are often offered along the route for an added cost.
- 🔥 The lava fields are the highlight: Even if you don’t see flowing lava, the black volcanic landscape and geothermal heat make the hike unique.
- 🚐 Book transport from Antigua: Pacaya is easiest as a guided day trip from Antigua, especially if you don’t want to deal with logistics yourself. Our private tour used a one-way hiking route, allowing us to see more scenery than the standard out-and-back trail.
🥾 Pacaya Hike
The Pacaya hike was a fun and memorable day trip from Antigua. The hike was more challenging than we expected, mostly because the first hour is a grueling uphill push with very little payoff until you get higher on the trail. The first 1.2 miles ascends ~1,200 feet for a steady, tiring climb. If you do not want to hike the uphill section, there is an option to rent a horse along the route. Once you reach the upper volcanic area, the payoff is huge, with epic volcano views, black lava fields, rugged terrain, and clouds moving dramatically around the peaks. The remaining 2.4 miles are mostly downhill and feature phenomenal close-up views of Pacaya; it also included the classic Pacaya stops, like “roasting marshmallows” in a volcanic vent, browsing souvenirs at the Lava Store, and, if desired, trying pizza cooked over volcanic vents. The hike down was much more scenic and rewarding than the climb up.

⬆️ Ascent and Horses
The ascent was the hardest part of the hike. The climb was steady, steep, and pretty grueling, especially before the views fully opened up. If the uphill push sounds like too much, there are usually horses available to rent along the way, which can make the experience more manageable. Thankfully, there were a couple of scenic viewpoints during the climb where we could pause, catch our breath, and enjoy views of Fuego, Acatenango, and Agua in the distance.
🌋 Volcano Viewpoint
The viewpoint at the summit was the best part of the hike with Pacaya prominently greeting you as soon as you emerge from the trail. We had decent visibility during our morning hike, but the volcanoes moved in and out of the clouds quickly, so we had to snap photos fast whenever the views opened up. On a clear day, you may be able to see several of Guatemala’s volcanoes from the trail or viewpoint area, including Fuego, Acatenango, Agua, and sometimes the volcanoes around Lake Atitlán in the distance. Fuego is especially exciting to spot because it is an active volcano and can be seen releasing a plume.
🍡 Roasting Marshmallows
One of the most memorable parts of hiking Pacaya Volcano was “roasting” marshmallows using the volcano’s natural geothermal heat. Our guide gave us skewers with colorful pink and blue marshmallows, and we got to insert them directly into a fumarole, a volcanic vent where hot air, water vapor, and gases escape through openings in the cooled lava rock. I pictured golden, campfire-style marshmallows, but this was more like slowly steaming them inside the volcano itself, which somehow made it even more fun. After letting them warm up in the vent, we pulled them back out soft, gooey, and ready to eat. It was one of those only-in-Guatemala moments that made the Pacaya hike feel so special after the grueling uphill climb.
🛒 Lava Store and Pizza
Along the descent, we stopped at the Lava Store, where local artisans sell souvenirs made from Pacaya’s lava rock. We bought a magnet made with lava from the volcano’s powerful nighttime eruption in 2010. We also watched pizza being cooked using heat from the volcanic vents. We didn’t try it, but seeing the volcano used as a natural outdoor oven was another fun and uniquely Pacaya experience.
⬇️ Descent
The descent was much easier than the climb and started with some of the best close-up views of Pacaya itself. This section was very rewarding, with the volcano rising dramatically in front of us. After the first beautiful portion, the rest of the hike down moved pretty quickly and had fewer major views.
🗺️ Voyageur Tours Guide
Our guide added a lot of personality to the experience. At one point, he picked up a slug and put it in his mouth, which was both shocking and strangely unforgettable. He also moved very quickly on the uphill portion – likely to stay ahead of large groups – so we had to work to keep pace. While he helped guide us through the volcanic landscape and classic Pacaya stops, I’d recommend speaking up if you need a slower pace or rent a horse, especially during the steep ascent.
