We love Lord of the Rings and couldn’t miss dressing up as our favorite characters to meet some of the cast at Wizard World Comic-Con 2018. I’m a little behind on this blog, but figured I’d catch up on blogging while everyone is in quarantine.
Boromir
Boromir is Scott’s favorite LOTR character, and Sean Bean is one of his favorite actors. Since we were going to meet him at Comic-Con, we wanted to do this costume justice. BTW Sean Bean loved Scott’s costume!
The Horn of Gondor
The Horn of Gondor was the first thing I worked on. I hand-painted a cheap brown drinking horn to look like the Horn of Gondor. I utilized silver puff paint to give it some texture and an aged look. I cut the end off the horn and inserted a trumpet mouthpiece. It actually sounds pretty awesome when you blow it. I’m sure the fans at Comic-Con loved when Scott blew it 🙂
The Arrows
The arrows were pretty tricky for Boromir. We bought large doll rods, painted them black, and glued black feathers to the ends. Then we screwed each arrow into a board going directly through the shirt.
The Costume
For the costume itself, we bought an Aragorn and medieval costumes, and pieced together parts (maroon shirt, black tunic, chain mail, belt, and boot covers) that looked similar to Boromir. I found some gold ribbon and embellishments to add to the maroon shirt.
The Bracers
I hand drew the Gondor tree with a silver permanent marker on some basic black bracers we bought. This was before I had a Cricut to make bracers and the designs (will try this next time)!
Wig, Sword, and Cloaks
We bought a wig for his hair because Scott just doesn’t have the patience to grow out his 😉 The sword is actually a plastic Aragorn sword…cause I didn’t have time to custom make one. We bought the official LOTR elvish cloaks with the leaf broach for both of us.
Legolas
Legolas is my favorite LOTR character. Can’t get enough of his crazy stunts (shield surfing and flipping onto a horse) and those “elf eyes”! Orlando Bloom wasn’t at Comic-Con, but I still wanted to have a great costume to complement Boromir.
The Costume
I converted a Peter Pan green tunic into Legolas’ tunic and used gold thread to embroider designs on it with my sewing machine. I had green pants, grey undershirt, and brown boots that complemented the outfit pretty well.
Bow and Arrow
For the bow and arrows, I utilized a Merida archery set and customized some plain arrows. I painted the arrows green and glued on yellow feathers. I hand drew some gold designs on the quiver. I bought the Legolas long blade rather than attempting to make my own.
The Bracers
I hand drew the leaf designs with a gold permanent marker on a brown belt (I already had) and some basic brown bracers we bought.
The HAIR and EARS
I got my hair highlighted before this (although it didn’t get quite as light as I had hoped). I practiced the braids once, and they turned out pretty well for the event. The side mini-French braids didn’t hold up super well so I used hair pins to hold them in place. The main braid was a fishtail (all that practice with Elsa braids paid off here). I bought elf ears that worked well.
Comic-Con
This was our first time to Wizard World, and it was a blast! We got to meet Sean Bean, Billy Boyd, and Sean Astin. Billy Boyd even came to the afterparty and we got to “kiss his cheeks”. Dancing with Sexy Gandalf was also a riot! Here’s the video of Sexy Gandalf singing Lorde of the Rings!
