πŸ₯Ύ Ram Head Trail Along Salt Pond Bay – Desert Meets the Caribbean

Ram Head Trail was easily one of the highlights of our week in St. John – and one of the most unique Caribbean hikes we’ve ever done. Instead of the lush tropical scenery we expected, the trail winds past Salt Pond Beach and Blue Cobblestone Beach before climbing through cactus-covered hills toward the dramatic southern tip of the island. With turquoise Caribbean water on both sides, rugged cliffs and increasingly spectacular views as we climbed, it felt like the desert had somehow landed in paradise. We followed the hike with snorkeling, a stingray sighting and picnic at Salt Pond Beach, making this one of our favorite adventure days of the trip.

πŸ—“οΈ Itinerary: Ram Head Trail + Salt Pond Beach

This plan came from our September 14, 2026 hike.

  • πŸš™ 8:00 AM – Leave Thalassa Seaside Retreat
  • πŸ…ΏοΈ 8:05 AM – Park at Salt Pond Bay trailhead
  • πŸ₯Ύ 8:10 AM – Begin Ram Head Trail (~3 mi, ~1.5h total)
    • πŸͺ¨ Cross Blue Cobblestone Beach and begin the steeper climb
    • 🌡 Continue through the exposed cactus-covered landscape toward Ram Head
    • πŸ“Έ Reach Ram Head summit (~1.4 mi from parking, ~45-min)
      • πŸ₯Ύ Descend back to Salt Pond Beach (~1 mi, ~30-min)
  • 🀿 10:30 AM – Snorkel Salt Pond Beach (saw a stingray)
  • πŸ–οΈ 11:30 AM – Picnic lunch and relax on the beach
  • πŸ₯Ύ 2:00 PM – Hike back up to parking lot (~0.4 mi, ~10-min)

πŸ’‘ Tips: Don’t Ram Into Trouble

  • πŸŒ… Start Early: Ram Head has very little shade, so hike in the morning before the strongest heat. An early start also gives you a better chance of finding a spot in the limited parking area.
  • πŸ’§ Bring Plenty of Water: There isn’t anywhere to refill once you’re on the trail, and the exposed climb makes hydration especially important.
  • πŸ₯Ύ Wear Good Shoes: This isn’t a technical hike, but there are rocky, uneven and steep sections. We recommend sturdy hiking shoes.
  • 🩱 Bring Your Swimsuit & Snorkel Gear: Cooling off and snorkeling at Salt Pond Beach is the perfect reward after the hike. Its seagrass beds are habitat for sea turtles and southern stingrays – we spotted a stingray during our snorkel.
  • 🧺 Pack Lunch: We brought lunch and stayed at Salt Pond for several hours rather than treating the beach as just something to hike through.

πŸ₯Ύ Ram Head Trail: From the Beach to the Cliffs

The adventure starts with the hike from the parking lot down to Salt Pond Beach before the Ram Head Trail continues toward the southernmost point of St. John. Just behind Salt Pond Beach is the actual salt pond that gives the area its name. An optional spur follows the edge of the pond to rocky Drunk Bay – we skipped it this time, but it’s an easy add-on if you want to extend the hike. Once past the beach, the scenery quickly changes into an arid landscape of cactus, rocky hills, rocky beaches and open Caribbean views that felt unlike anywhere else we explored on the island.

πŸͺ¨ Blue Cobblestone Beach: A Rocky Intermission

Before the final climb to Ram Head, the trail crosses Blue Cobblestone Beach, a striking shoreline covered in smooth stones that breaks up the hike and gives you another perspective of St. John’s rugged southern coast. It’s a dramatic contrast to the white-sand beaches found elsewhere around the island before the trail turns uphill for the final climb.

🌡 Ram Head: Our Favorite Views of the South Shore

The final section gets steeper and more exposed as you climb through the dry landscape toward Ram Head, with stunning views of the bays and coastline below with sheer drop-offs as you approach the summit. The summit sits at the southernmost point of St. John and opens to expansive views over the Caribbean.

🐠 Salt Pond Beach: The Perfect Post-Hike Reward

Instead of immediately hiking back to the Jeep, we treated Salt Pond Beach as the second half of the adventure. Salt Pond Bay is great for snorkeling, with rocky shorelines and seagrass beds where sea turtles and southern stingrays can be found. We spotted a stingray while snorkeling and a blacktip shark from the beach, then ate our picnic lunch and relaxed for several hours before tackling the short uphill hike back to the parking lot.
