Split is the second largest city in Croatia and was the filming location for the city of Meereen in Game of Thrones . We explored two iconic filming locations – Klis Fortress, which served as Meereen during the slave rebellion, and Diocletian’s Palace, where Daenerys’ dragons were chained in the dungeon.

During our one-day cruise stop in Split, we followed this Game of Thrones itinerary.

ONE DAY GAME OF THRONES ITINERARY

• 9:30AM – 1:00PM – Norwegian Cruise Line Excursion “Explore the Dragon’s Dungeon” ($168 total)
  • Klis Fortress – Perched in the hills above Split, this ancient stronghold served as Meereen in Game of Thrones, where Daenerys freed the slaves.
  • Diocletian’s Palace – Explore the underground cellars, where Daenerys kept her dragons. Visit the hallway where Ser Barristan Selmy met his fate.
  • Kill the Masters Scene – Stand in the very spot where the masters were slaughtered in the streets of Meereen.
• Optional Stops (Time Permitting):
  • St. Domnius Cathedral & Bell Tower – Located within Diocletian’s Palace, this offers the best panoramic views of Split.
  • Game of Thrones Museum – We snapped a quick photo with the dragon but skipped the full museum due to time constraints and mixed reviews.

Klis Fortress (Meereen)

Begin with a scenic drive to Klis Fortress, a dramatic stronghold perched above the Adriatic. In the show, this fortress was the city of Meereen, where Daenerys freed the slaves in Season 4. Its real-life history dates back to the 7th century, having been ruled by Croatians, Ottomans, Venetians, and Austrians. If you are on a tight timeline, taking a tour is the quickest way to get transportation and access to the fortress. It was a little rushed so be efficient with taking videos and pictures.

Diocletian’s Palace (Daenerys’ Dragons)

We then returned to Split to visit the Diocletian’s Palace, a sprawling Roman complex. Here, in its ancient dungeon, Daenerys’ dragons were once chained. Along the way, we also visited key spots like the site of Ser Barristan Selmy’s death and the streets where the masters were slaughtered.

💡TIP: We were able to get back into the palace by just showing our tour passes after our tour finished, and they let us enter to take additional pictures.
