Earnslaw Burn New Zealand

Landing at Earnslaw Burn and Grant Glacier on our helicopter tour was phenomenal. The gorgeous array of waterfalls at Earnslaw Burn was more breathtaking than imaginable.

We took the Earnslaw Burn Explorer helicopter tour through Heliworks Queenstown, which included landings at Earnslaw Burn (Rings of Power Khazad-dûm entrance and Hobbit film location) and Grant Glacier.

Earnslaw Burn

Earnslaw Burn is every bit as beautiful as portrayed in Rings of Power and The Hobbit. As the Earnslaw Glacier melts it creates a stunning array of waterfalls streaming all along the Earnslaw Burn expanse. Most waterfalls were a trickle but the main waterfall featured in many of the shots in Rings of Power was gushing. The easiest access to Earnslaw Burn is via helicopter. Since we were short on time we opted for this rather than the 15 mile Earnslaw Burn Track.

Here are our 360 videos if you want to look around more:

Entrance to Khazad-dûm (Rings of Power)

The entrance to Khazad-dûm in Rings of Power is filmed at Earnslaw Burn. Below are some comparison shots (location: 44°38’43.8″S 168°24’27.4″E).

Grant Glacier

Grant Glacier is the first glacier we’ve ever visited. It was amazing the helicopter got to land on the glacier. Of course Scott took some creative shots of the One Ring in the snow like the LOTR scene where Frodo drops the ring and Boromir retrieves it.

Fly, You Fools!

Made a “Fly, you fools!” shirt with both an eagle and helicopter to wear for the flight to Earnslaw Burn (Khazad-dûm). We also saw the Weta Workshop Gandalf and eagle at the Wellington airport.
