There’s nothing quite like a summer night at The Muny. Tucked into the trees of Forest Park, America’s oldest and largest outdoor musical theatre pairs massive productions, elaborate sets and huge casts with the magic of watching a show beneath the stars. The experience starts long before curtain with picnics, live music and lively plazas, while nearly 1,500 free seats keep one of St. Louis’ most beloved theatre traditions accessible to everyone. After more than a century, The Muny still feels like the perfect blend of musical theatre, Forest Park and a classic St. Louis summer night.
📚 Backstory: More Than a Century of Muny Magic
- 🎭 The story began in 1913, when a massive outdoor pageant was staged on Art Hill to celebrate the 150th anniversary of St. Louis
- 🎶 A production of Aida followed at the present-day Muny site in 1917, drawing thousands and proving the natural amphitheatre could become something much bigger
- 🌟 The Municipal Theatre officially opened in 1919 with Robin Hood. The Muny celebrated its 100th season in 2018, which fittingly ended with Meet Me in St. Louis.
- 🆓 Free seats have been part of The Muny since its first season, keeping live theatre accessible to generations of St. Louisans
- 🏆 Today, The Muny is the oldest and largest outdoor musical theatre in North America
- 🎬 Each production is created specifically for The Muny and its enormous stage, with an entire show coming together in just a matter of weeks
📍 Location: Broadway in the Heart of Forest Park
- 🌳 Located in Forest Park, surrounded by some of the park’s towering trees
- 🎭 Shows begin at 8:15 PM, just as the sun is setting, and continue beneath the night sky
- 🧺 Forest Park makes it easy to pair a show with a picnic or other activities before the performance
✨ Highlights: Where the Stage Meets the Stars
- 🌙 Theatre Under the Stars – Watching daylight fade and the stage lights take over is part of the Muny experience
- 🎭 Massive Productions – The enormous stage allows for elaborate scenery, large ensembles and effects that would be difficult to pull off in a traditional indoor theatre
- 🌳 Forest Park Setting – Trees rise behind and around the stage, creating a backdrop you simply don’t get on Broadway
- 🎶 Seven Musicals Each Summer – Every season brings a mix of classics, family favorites and newer shows
- 🆓 Free Seats – One of The Muny’s most beloved traditions offers nearly 1,500 seats completely free for every regular-season performance
🎟️ Entry: From Free Seats to Front Row
- 🎟️ Reserved tickets are available throughout the nearly 11,000-seat amphitheatre, with a wide range of price points
- 🆓 Free seating – The last nine rows are free and available first-come, first-served, so arrive early for popular shows as lines can form well before gates open.
- 🎭 Reserved-seat gates generally open before showtime, giving you time to grab concessions and get settled
- 💺 Season tickets are a popular option for St. Louisans who want to see the entire summer lineup
💡 Tips: Set the Stage for a Great Night
- 🎶 Arrive early – Come early to enjoy The Muny’s live pre-show entertainment and music in the plazas before the performance. You’ll also have more time to explore the grounds and avoid the worst of the Forest Park traffic and parking rush.
- 🚗 Park strategically – Parking is free in The Muny lots and along surrounding Forest Park streets. For regular seating, Government Dr is convenient for easy exit, while McKinley or Theatre Dr offer easier access to the free seats at the top of The Muny.
- 🧺 Bring your own food – The Muny allows outside food, water, nonalcoholic drinks and small soft-sided coolers. Pack a picnic to enjoy in Forest Park beforehand, then bring your snacks inside to save on concessions.
- 👟 Wear comfortable shoes – Parking can involve a decent walk, and the theatre itself has plenty of ramps and stairs
- 🥵 Dress for the weather – Muny Air, the theatre’s unique cooling system, provides a welcome breeze, but you’re still outdoors in the middle of a St. Louis summer, so expect plenty of heat and humidity
- 🌧️ Keep an eye on the forecast – Shows can continue through light rain, but severe weather may cause delays or cancellations
- 🆓 Try the free seats at least once – They’re one of The Muny’s most distinctive traditions and a fun way to experience a show without spending a dime
🎭 Visits: Shows, Picnics & Summer Nights
The Muny is one of those places that just feels like summer in St. Louis. My very first show was Cinderella from the free seats with my 4-H club, while Scott’s first Muny experience was Aladdin. Since then, we’ve gone back together for Cinderella, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Camelot, Something Rotten and Young Frankenstein, while I’ve also enjoyed ladies’ nights at Meet Me in St. Louis and Ain’t Too Proud. No matter the show, the huge stage, open-air setting and Forest Park backdrop make a night at The Muny feel like its own uniquely St. Louis experience.
✨ Renovations: A Modern Muny Under the Stars
The Muny may be more than a century old, but major renovations have modernized the experience with an upgraded stage, improved lighting and sound, video technology, automated lifts and scenic elements that make its massive productions even more impressive. The audience also benefits from Muny Air, which uses overhead fans, 24 blowers and 140 directional vents to keep air moving through the open-air theatre – a very welcome upgrade on hot St. Louis summer nights.
✨ The Muny Grounds: More Than Just the Stage
The Muny experience starts well before the curtain rises. The beautifully renovated grounds are worth exploring, from the Steward Family Plaza and Kooyumjian Family Plaza to fountains, tropical plants, stone-column walkways and the striking chandelier near the ticket booth. Live music and other pre-show entertainment add to the atmosphere as crowds gather, while flags and landscaped gathering spaces make the entrance feel especially festive.
🧺 Pre-Show in Forest Park: Make a Night of It
One of our favorite parts of going to The Muny is making an evening out of everything before the curtain even rises. We love packing a picnic and a bottle of wine, finding a spot in Forest Park and relaxing before heading into the theatre. It’s also a great way to save a little money since food and drinks inside The Muny can add up quickly. We’ve even paired show nights with kayaking and pedal boating from the Boathouse, which makes for a pretty perfect St. Louis summer date. Whether it’s date night, ladies’ night or a group hangout, arriving early and enjoying Forest Park turns a show into a full night out.
Cinderella: Picnicking with Prince Charming
We enjoyed a wonderful picnic before the 2019 show in our Cinderella-inspired looks.
Camelot: Anniversary Picnic and Play
💕 Ladies’ Night: Broadway with the Girls
The Muny makes for a fun summer ladies’ night. I’ve gone with friends to see Meet Me in St. Louis and Ain’t Too Proud, pairing a night of Broadway under the stars with plenty of time to catch up and enjoy Forest Park.
Meet Me in St. Louis
My friend and I saw Meet Me in St. Louis in 2018 for the final production of The Muny’s historic 100th season. It was the perfect show to close such a major milestone.
Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations
My friend Lauren and I had a fun ladies’ night out seeing Ain’t Too Proud.
👩❤️👨 Date Nights: Romance Under the Stars
The Muny is one of our favorite St. Louis summer date nights. Scott and I love making a full evening of it with a picnic and wine in Forest Park before the show, and we’ve even added pedal boating from the Boathouse before heading over to The Muny.
Aladdin
Scott’s first Muny show was Aladdin – a fitting introduction since it’s his favorite Disney animated movie.
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
🆓 Free Seats: Theatre for Everyone
One of The Muny’s best traditions is its 1,456 free seats, located in the last nine rows and available first-come, first-served for every regular-season performance. The line forms at the Kooyumjian Family Plaza upper entrance, with gates opening at 7 PM – arrive earlier for popular shows. Park in the Upper Muny Lot or near McKinley Drive for easier access, and bring snacks and binoculars for a closer look at the stage. Just know the free seats are the highest in the theatre and a bit more cramped, especially for taller guests, and the steep downward viewing angle can get uncomfortable on your neck during a long show. Still, for completely free musical theatre under the stars, they’re one of The Muny’s most unique traditions.
Something Rotten
We caught Something Rotten! from The Muny’s free seats, taking in the massive stage and beautiful sunset views from the top of the theatre. I even broke out my dork binoculars to get a closer look at the colorful Renaissance costumes and all the details on stage.
