🪂 Switzerland – Schilthorn Piz Gloria, Birg Thrill Walk & Paragliding Lauterbrunnen Valley

Our last day in Mürren was all about thrills worthy of a James Bond film. We began by ascending to the legendary Schilthorn, where the revolving Piz Gloria restaurant served a panoramic breakfast buffet with views of more than 200 alpine peaks. This mountaintop, made famous in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, paired cinematic history with jaw-dropping scenery. On the way down, we tested our nerves on the Birg Thrill Walk, inching across glass panels, steel nets, and a tightrope suspended high above the valley floor. But nothing compared to the afternoon’s highlight – paragliding from Birg to Stechelberg over the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Taking off at nearly 8,200 feet and descending some 6,000 feet over the course of a 20-minute flight, we soared past waterfalls, cliffs, and alpine villages.

Itinerary

This one-day plan comes from our August 24, 2025 visit (Day 5), based in Mürren at Hotel Alpina. We delayed paragliding from August 22 to the afternoon of this day due to a cloudy forecast. Our original schedule had afternoon flex time built in, which worked great for the schedule adjustment.

💡 Tips

  • 🌦️ Check weather: Check the Schilthorn webcams (Schilthorn Piz Gloria, Birg) before heading up – conditions change fast in the Alps.
  • 🥶 High altitude attire: Schilthorn and Birg are cold and windy even in summer – dress in warm layers, gloves, and a buff for ears
  • 🧤 Paragliding attire: For paragliding, wear warm clothing (warm pants + leggings, long sleeve shirt + wind breaker, gloves, and buff for ears).
  • 🔒 Secure paragliding gear: Bring a way to attach your gear to you (camera carabiner, sunglasses strap, phone leash, etc.). Switzerland Paragliding will store your backpack in a pouch that you will jump with so you’ll have it at the bottom.
  • 🪂 Paragliding jump point: If clouds block visibility, flights may start lower, adding a few extra minutes of hiking (15 → 20-min), reducing jump height (8500 → 8200 m) and airtime (25 → 20-min). In summer, launches are higher than in winter, giving more flight time.
  • Cable car timing: Cable cars only run every 30 minutes – plan to arrive a few minutes early at each station so you don’t miss a departure.
  • 🛒 Grocery hours: Coop in Mürren closes early – shop in the afternoon for next day’s breakfast/snacks.

Schilthorn

At 2,970 meters, the Schilthorn offers some of the most dramatic views in the Bernese Alps, with the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau dominating the skyline of over 200 peaks. The journey up by cable car is an adventure in itself, but it’s the sweeping panorama at the summit that makes this one of Switzerland’s most iconic mountaintop experiences. Its fame was amplified when it appeared as the snowy hideout of Blofeld in the James Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, forever linking this peak with 007 lore.

James Bond Exhibit and Walk of Fame

The summit is also home to the Bond World 007 exhibit, celebrating the film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, which was shot here in 1968. Interactive displays, original props, and behind-the-scenes clips immerse visitors in the world of 007, adding a playful cinematic twist to the mountain setting. Outside, there’s a James Bond Walk of Fame that features plaques of the cast from On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. You can even “fist bump” James Bond himself through George Lazenby’s plaque – a playful touch that brings 007 to life against an unforgettable alpine backdrop.

360° Restaurant Piz Gloria

Perched at the top, the revolving Piz Gloria Restaurant makes a full rotation every 45 minutes, with an ever-changing alpine backdrop. We enjoyed the hearty breakfast buffet, a one-of-a-kind dining experience where the mountains themselves become part of the meal. Check out the full rotation below (YouTube Short).

Birg Thrill Walk

Just below the summit along the cable car ride back to Mürren, Birg’s Thrill Walk clings to the cliffside with glass floors, steel nets, a tightrope, and narrow paths suspended high above the valley. It’s a short but exhilarating walk that combines with phenomenal views of the peaks (YouTube Short).

Paragliding Birg to Stechelberg

The most unforgettable adventure of the day was paragliding from Birg, launching at ~8,200 ft (2,500m) for a 20-minute flight over Mürren and the Lauterbrunnen Valley. The experience blended pure adrenaline with scenic wonder, as we glided past cliffs, waterfalls, and alpine villages before landing gently in Stechelberg far below. Check out some of the unreal footage we capture below (see also YouTube 360 Video and YouTube Short).
